The Golden Carol vertont einen anonymen altenglischen Weihnachtsliedes ('We saw the light shine out afar, On Christmas in the morning / 'Wir sahen das Licht in der Ferne leuchten, am Weihnachtsmorgen') mit dem Untertitel 'von Melchior, Balthasar und Caspar, den Heiligen Drei Königen', und erzählt von der Anbetung des Christuskindes durch die Könige an jenem ersten Weihnachtsmorgen. Das Wunder und die emotionale Weite des Textes werden durch eine stetige Steigerung in den beiden Strophen, sowohl in der Dynamik als auch in der harmonischen Sprache, zum Leben erweckt. Die friedlichen ersten Strophen, die durchweg homophon sind und sich an Bach-Chorälen orientieren, lassen die vom Jazz inspirierte Harmonik, die Ponniah in seinen Werken häufig einsetzt, erahnen. Nach und nach werden mehr Komplexität, Dissonanzen und Stimmteilungen eingeführt, bis sich die Emotionen auf dem Höhepunkt des Stücks entladen : 'And see in heaven, our glorious home, The Star of Christmas morning' ('Und seht im Himmel, unserer herrlichen Heimat, den Stern des Weihnachtsmorgens').Schwierigkeitsgrad: 2-3
A setting of an anonymous Old English Carol '('We saw the light shine out afar, On Christmas in the morning), subtitled 'of Melchior, Balthazar, and Caspar, the Three Kings', The Golden Carol tells of the kings' adoration of the Christ child on that first Christmas morning. The wonder and emotional breadth of the text is brought to life through a steady build up through the two verses, in dynamic levels but also in harmonic language. Homophonic throughout, drawing influence from Bach chorales, the peaceful opening stanzas only hint at the jazz-inspired harmony which Ponniah frequently deploys in his works. More complexity, dissonance and divisi are gradually introduced until the outpouring of emotion at the climax of the piece 'And see in heaven, our glorious home, The Star of Christmas morning.'Instrumentation:mixed choir (SATB divisi) a cappella
