Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix - Variations sérieuses op. 54 - Besetzung: Klavier zu zwei Händen

1841, auf der Höhe seiner Meisterschaft, schrieb Mendelssohn in schneller Folge drei Variationenzyklen für Klavier. Der erste Zyklus, die "Variations sérieuses" op. 54, ist wohl als sein bedeutendstes Klavierwerk anzusehen. Er war Teil eines Sammelbandes mit Werken renommierter Komponisten der Zeit, dessen Erlös für die Errichtung eines Beethoven-Denkmals in Bonn bestimmt war. Seinerzeit gab es eine wahre Massenproduktion von sogenannten "Variations brillantes" für Klavier. Um sich davon zu distanzieren, betitelte Mendelssohn seine siebzehn Variationen in d-moll op. 54 mit "Variations sérieuses". Das wunderschöne Hauptthema ist von ernstem, schmerzlichem Charakter, der durch alle Verwandlungen hindurch erhalten bleibt.

In 1841, at the height of his mastery, Mendelssohn wrote three variation cycles for piano in quick succession.
