Der Band behandelt in sieben großen Kapiteln die Geschichte des Christentums vom Spätmittelalter über die Reformation im deutschsprachigen Raum und in Europa, das Konfessionelle Zeitalter, das Zeitalter von Pietismus und Aufklärung, das 'lange 19. Jahrhundert' und das 'kurze 20. Jahrhundert'. Die Darstellung will vor allem die großen Zusammenhänge und Entwicklungslinien erschließen. Sie soll angehenden Pfarrerinnen und Pfarrern und Religionslehrerinnen und Religionslehrern ein historisch begründetes Verständnis jener Gestalt des Christentums eröffnen, mit der sie in ihrem Wirkungskreis aktuell zu tun haben. Zugleich vermittelt sie das zur Orientierung und für Examenszwecke nötige Grundgerüst der wichtigsten Namen und Daten.

In seven large chapters, the volume deals with the history of Christianity from the late Middle Ages to the Reformation in the German-speaking world and in Europe, the confessional age, the age of Pietism and Enlightenment, the 'long 19th century' and the 'short 20th century'. The presentation aims above all to reveal the major connections and lines of development. It is intended to provide prospective pastors and teachers of religion with a historically founded understanding of the form of Christianity with which they currently deal in their sphere of activity. At the same time, it provides the basic framework of the most important names and dates necessary for orientation and examination purposes.
