Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. The original texts are comprehensively annotated, and feature an introductory chapter. In the new volumes, additional essays delve into specific aspects of the works, illuminating their historical context and reception to the present day. Die drei pseudo-cäsarianischen Bella wurden in karolingischen und nachkarolingischen Handschriften zusammen mit dem von Cäsar verfassten Bellum civile überliefert.

Das Bellum Alexandrinum (78 Kapitel) schließt direkt an das Bellum civile an. Trotz des Titels gibt es mehrere Kriegsschauplätze (Alexandria/Ägypten, Pontus/Kleinasien und Illyrien). Der anonyme Verfasser muss ein Augenzeuge mit hervorragenden Detailkenntnissen gewesen sein.

Das Bellum Africum (98 Kapitel) ist ein chronologisch geordneter Bericht über Cäsars Feldzug (47-46 v. Chr.) in Nordafrika gegen Anhänger des Pompeius bis zu seinem Sieg bei Thapsus und dem Selbstmord Catos d. J. in Utica. Der anonyme Verfasser - vermutlich ein Offizier Cäsars - hat höchstwahrscheinlich selbst daran teilgenommen.

Das Bellum Hispaniense (42 Kapitel) berichtet von Cäsars Kämpfen (46-45 v. Chr.) gegen die Pompeianer in Spanien bis zu seinem Sieg bei Munda.

Auch wenn Stil und Darstellungsweise dieser anonymen Verfasser sich mit denen Cäsars nicht messen können, sind die Texte nicht nur wegen der darin beschriebenen Ereignisse, sondern auch wegen der militärischen Fachsprache und des sermo castrensis interessant, zumal eine echte lateinische Parallelüberlieferung fehlt.
