This volume is dedicated to the contents of these mosaics, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explains in detail their meaning and the messages they convey. It is the first to depict all of Ravenna's early Christian wall and vault mosaics in colour. Ravenna's early Christian mosaics, created between the 5th and 7th centuries, are among the most important artistic monuments in the world. Although there are several studies on early Christian Ravenna, it has not yet been undertaken to place the pictorial representations in the context of early Christian art. This volume inquires into the meaning of the images, the function they fulfilled in the various buildings, and the interpretation they received in their liturgical contexts and by the people of late antiquity.
