Alaa Al-Aswani, geboren 1957 in Kairo, studierte Zahnmedizin in Ägypten und Amerika. Um 1989 veröffentlichte er seine erste Geschichtensammlung. Alaa Al-Aswani lebt und arbeitet in Kairo. Für seine Erzählungen und Romane erhielt er zahlreiche Auszeichnungen. 2008 wurde Alaa Al-Aswani mit dem "Coburger Rückert-Preis 2008" geehrt und 2011 mit dem "Blue Metropolis Arab Prize - Al Majidi Ibn Dhaher Arab Literary Prize".
